Last week we were invited to judge a design tournament at Montclair State University. It was great to see how much the University has grown, and the design program headed up by John Luttropp is amazing. It was great to meet Laura Dapito and see Kwan, a fellow graduate and judge at the competition.

So we caved under the pressure and bought Guitar Hero. Stef is definitely the best out of the bunch, but that doesnt say much since she plays at home everyday til the wee hours of the morning. We'd also like to take this opportunity to introduce you to Zach Goodman (he's the one with the glasses and really intense stare). He will be around helping us on a freelance basis with some writing. He's a pretty good writer and he also shares his matzah, which is nice. Welcome to the team Zach Attack.

Cadillac Records on Halsey Street

Halsey Street is turning back the hands of time starting today. Stef gave me a heads up that there's some filming going down at the north end of Halsey Street by our old studio.

Here's the email Stef sent me from Ade at the Newark Art Supply:

"Halsey Street will not look the same from now until April 4th. A movie, Cadillac Records, is being shot right in from of our store. The block has been dressed to look like Chicago in the 1950's and Newark Art Supply will be turned into a pharmacy temporarily. Kinda kewl, eh?

The film features stars like Beyonce, Adrian Brody, Mos Def and Cedric the Entertainer. Word is that all these guys, except Beyonce who has completed her part, will be here from April 1 - 4 shooting all day.

Don't say I didn't tell you! PLUS, all this stuff coincides with an art show we are having for Dave Dziemian on Friday, April 4th, from 6-9pm...hope you can make it. If not, spread the word. Peace!"

This past Saturday, we had the pleasure of attending Brian & Elka's Wedding. Minister Kathy Griffin was there in all her glory. The Wedding was full of dirty jokes and laughs, chickens and goats. We were asked to handle the development of the identity and stationery for the agency. So here they are, hot off the presses. We're glad they gave us the green light for the textured paper. It really feels amazing, has a rough "brick" texture to it.

We think this is such a great idea... Imagine a place where you can take your kids to get an awesome haircut then reward them for being good with a sick toy! Well that's the premise behind Frankie's Playce, a kid's salon/toy store. All very high end with amazing toys from overseas and a team of stylists that will leave your kids looking great. We're helping Frankie with her identity (below) and color scheme throughout the salon. We can't wait to start working on the rest of her collateral! Update: I forgot to mention there will be a party room available for renting. Yet another great idea.

2nd Annual Dirty Baby New Year!

Here at Tritonic, we like to partake in a little holiday cheer. While most companies may do a "Secret Santa", we have created our own version of "Dirty Santa" instead: Dirty Baby New Year. Here's how it works:

1. Everyone brings in a wrapped gift ($20 value) on the designated day (Jan 3).
2. Numbered papers from 1-9 (9 players) will be placed in a hat.
3. We each pick a number.
4. #1 picks first gift and unwraps it.
5. #2 person can then choose to steal #1's gift or pick their own.
6. #3 person can then steal any opened gift (#1 or #2) or pick a new one. This get repeated until everyone has a gift.

Basically, the higher the number the better. The later you pick, the more opened gifts you see. If you're first, you're out of luck.

The Newark Downtown District reached out to us several months ago to design a supplement that captured the theme "Newark Rocks". We took this concept and over the next couple of days went around the city to take pics of different things that expressed Newark. We took all these pictures, shook them in a bag and created a collage that explodes off the page. The center spread is an interactive calendar which lets you check off the different events going down at the new Prudential Center. We're really happy on the way it turned out. Check it out...

We have been waiting and waiting for this day to come. The first Tritonic baby! It was an all day event for Nikki and Luigi. Starting at 5am and ending at 8:09pm to be exact. It was impossible for the team to push pixels as we wanted to get the final call. A baby boy was born!!! His name: Luca Filippo Tartara!!!! Looking good Lou as a dad and to Nikki for a speedy recovery!

Our First Game at Prudential Center

Well, we found ourselves the night of Halloween at the new Prudential Center. Watching the Devils skate to victory. Boys & Girls Clubs of Newark extended their welcomes to us and it turned out to be a great night. Thanks to Felix and Bryn of BGCN, the MCJ Foundation, and Michael Gilfillan for the seats and service. It was one night we will never forget. The center is a huge step for the city, and we were excited to be a part of it for the night.

The Girls Claim the Wii Cup Again!

For our second outing of the Wii Cup Finals in Bowling it was a go for the cup attitude. The girls won the first opening round of the games here at 421 Halsey. The night was crisp, the food was fresh and there were new members on both sides. The Wii console was turned on around 7pm and the last round was played till 10pm. It was a battle, and a struggle on both sides... but in the end the girls came up with the win. The Wii Cup will reside in the corner of the studio near Stefanie's desk till next time. The guys held their heads up high after leaving the field, knowing that the next match will be victorious! Thanks to all that came!

It's basically a live design tournament where everyone goes head to head to come up with the hottest design in 15 minutes. If you are a designer and missed Cut & Paste this year, do yourself a favor and make sure to go next year. We had a blast, the venue was incredible, the music was thumpin', and the work was on point. Tiger Beer was flowing all night long, can't beat that.

This past weekend we burned the midnight oil to help develop and design a direct response to the senseless acts of violence occuring in Newark these past few weeks. We are honored to be a part of this initiative. Below are some pics of the press conference held on Tuesday, August 14th.

The Newark Community Foundation has created the Community Eye in order to work with the Newark community and its various constituencies to impact gun violence in Newark.

The City is seeking to deploy seven square miles of gunshot detection technology and 50 public safety surveillance cameras to cover an area of the City in which approximately 80% of our gun violence has occurred over the course of the past 2 ½ years.

The gunshot detection technology consists of a series of sensors which, near-instantaneously, detect and pinpoint the source of gunfire. These sensors then convey the information to police dispatchers and automated public safety cameras with stunning accuracy. There are several benefits to this cutting edge technology which has been deployed successfully in a number of cities including Washington DC and neighboring East Orange:

This past Friday, Newark Now threw a Grand Opening Party for their office at 89 James Street. They simply called it the Summer Oasis, and it ended up being just that. ICSC Vegas trip

Fresh off the plane from Vegas! The ICSC convention was an amazing event to witness. It's a shame we had to leave a couple of days early, so much to do and see. We're so glad to see that Newark had a presence and the word is being spread. The Atlas booth was a huge success and everything went up very smoothly. We have no doubt this conference will be a business booster for all who attended.

BGCN Summer Camp

The Boys and Girls Club of Newark is getting ready to kick off an exciting summer. The Boys and Girls Club will be offering Summer Enrichment and Life Camp programs for kids ages 6-13 years old. We enjoyed working on this project very much; we all wanted to go swimming and play soccer when the day was thru. Andrew Jacobs of the NYT wrote an interesting article on Newark this weekend. He actually came by our studio two weeks ago and interviewed us on what we thought of Newark and who would be the key people to talk to. Really nice guy, he even came by and partied with us by Ron's house. Take a second to read through the article, here's our mention, "The city’s oldest gallery, City Without Walls, forms the nucleus of the enclave, which includes apartments inside a former carriage factory and a graphic design studio, Tritonic, whose three young partners are the toast of Newark’s corporate and political set." Doesn't quite do our team justice but we'll take it. ;)

Last night we attended the Boys & Girls Club of Newark's Evening of the Stars. It was held in the Mezzanine of 744 Broad Street. This building has so much history and such amazing architectual detail. We hear it was one of the country's first skyscrapers and New Jersey's tallest commercial tower. The turnout was also great to see and we were honored to be a part of such a fulfilling night. Cheers to Felix, Brynn and the entire BGCN team.

The change in Newark is apparent. As soon as the new administration stepped foot in city hall, new ideas and improvements have been on the rise. The Newark Police Foundation was developed to aid in the development of the Newark Police Department by providing additional resources that supplement existing allowances in the Newark municipal budget. NPF is the only organization that is authorized to solicit funds on behalf of the Newark Police Department. NPF does not make telephone solicitations and neither does the Newark Police Department.

Crime Stoppers for anonymous tips and Gun Stoppers for calling in any gun related crimes. These two campaigns are just the beginning! This past weekend, we took the entire crew to visit this lifestyle center and see it first hand... and how the new spring campaign will affect the visuals there. We took a three hour tour of the buidlings, shops and even had an amazing meal at Pasticco. This center is an escape from your everyday and really brings enjoyment to the Queens area. If you are ever in Manhattan and are looking for a retreat, stop by Glendale, NY and experience this center. All it takes is hopping on the F train to 71st Street, Forest Hills. Yesterday was a SUPER day for Newark, as a city and as a community. Ever since the Mayor Cory A. Booker took office, there is a different feel in the city. This feeling has set in on the residents and businesses. (SNCC) The Super Neighborhoond Community Covenant marks the day where the power of the poeple can now be seen and heard. We now all have a direct say on the changes and efforts the city has. We will all now have a link with City Hall which allows Newark to climb to that next level. 5 Pilot sections were chosen to begin the initiative and Lincoln Park happens to be on of the pilots selected. Lincoln Park is known for its great community base and powerful leaders. It is also home of the Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District, home of Tritonic, City Without Walls Gallery, and many more exciting organizations. It will be invigorating to see the change happen before our eyes, to be a part of it all and to make history.
